i want to know how lead and soldered joints on stained glass work e.g. tiffany lamps is made to look black. do they paint the lead + soldered joints with a black paint? if so what kind of paint do they use?

It is a liquid chemical called patina. It comes in several finishes.

Here is the website where I order many of my stained glass supplies, to show you what there is.

  1. I’m not sure if they use black paint or not, but what I suggest is using liquid black boot polish. Rub it over all the areas you want coloured, leave it to dry then polish up the glass. You could also try rubbing a raw lemon over the lead and leave it to dry. This will react with the lead and hopefully make it look darker.

  2. You can buy a patina to use that is specifically for solder/metal. It’s not very expensive (under $10) and you can get it in several finishes. I have black and copper.
